I wanted to do a post on the brand new MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencil collection as soon as possible. A lot of beauty lovers had very mixed feelings about these, and I was looking forward to trying them for myself. These were released this week online, and there was a code for free overnight shipping, so I ordered one shade to see how I would like the formula and pigmentation. I ended up getting Patentpink, which is a lavender-pink shade. These pencils are similar to the other burst of lip “crayon” products we’ve seen from Clinique, Revlon, Wet n Wild, and several other brands. The overall product is like a chubby pencil crayon for your lips. It makes applying the product extremely easy and the pencil itself is actually a twist-up with no sharpening required. If you’d like to see swatches and my full thoughts on this brand new product,
The product itself is essentially a large crayon-like applicator. You twist the bottom up when you need more product, which makes this extremely convenient. No sharpening the pencil and creating a mess everywhere! I find that this is one of my favorite aspects of the product. I hate sharpening eyeliner and lip products. It always seems that I have to sharpen my makeup at the least convenient times ever, so when there’s a product that is a simple twist-up, I appreciate it.
The product has a round, bulbous tip. The texture is very creamy and silky smooth, and the finish is somewhat glossy. I wouldn’t say these are as glossy as an actual lip gloss, but more similar to MAC Lustre finish lipstick.
Patentpink is a light lavender-pink. I adore this shade because not only is it trendy and unique right now, it’s actually a great alternative to a plain beige-nude lip color. I think the tones of lavender and pink are pretty even in this lipstick, enough to make it flattering on a variety of people. It’s a pretty different shade from most of the lip colors in my makeup collection, since a lot of my lavender-pink shades tend to lean either really purple or really pink, or they are much brighter and darker than this one.
Mac Patentpolish Lip Pencil It's Really Me Reviews
Patentpink (with flash)
This felt pretty great on my lips. It was smooth, creamy, moisturizing, and pigmented. I built the product up for quite an opaque finish, which took about 2 coats of product. The finish IS semi-sheer, meaning you can apply it lightly for a demure wash of color or layer this on with 2 or 3 coats for a much more intense, opaque, pigmented finish. Not everyone will like that these have a semi-sheer quality to these. If you’re looking for SUPER pigmented lipstick, this just isn’t the product for you. It is slightly glossy and has that soft, ethereal look to it.
Mac Patentpolish Lip Pencil It's Really Me
The only downside to this product for me is the price and the amount of product. These are $20.00 USD each, and each Lip Pencil is 2.3g of product. Out of curiosity, I twisted the product all the way up and out so I could see how much is in the pencil. To be perfectly honest, I think this product is a bit expensive for the amount you’re getting. If you really found a shade you loved and wore it every single day, you’d probably find yourself running out in just a couple of months. Since the product is so creamy and has that soft texture, it feels (and looks) like you use a lot of product per application when you look at the tip of the Lip Pencil. Personally, I think if the price was lowered by $5 or so, I’d be more apt to love these entirely. I’m a huge MAC Lipstick fan and their lipsticks actually retail for less than one of these pencils.
Overall, if you can get past the somewhat steep price point, these are a nice lip option. The finish is lustrous and a bit glossy, but creamy and moisturizing. This particular shade is pigmented, but semi-sheer, so you can build up the opacity of it. The overall amount of product you get isn’t super impressive and these are limited edition, so if you really fall in love with a specific color, you will want to buy a backup to have in your collection…which brings me back to the price point. I don’t regret purchasing Patentpink, and I still would love Teen Dream and Go For Girlie.
MAC Patentpolish Lip Pencils are limited edition and available online at MAC’s website now. Each Lip Pencil retails for $20.00 USD and there are twelve shades total. You can browse the shades online here. These release at all MAC locations nationwide on April 3rd, 2014 if you prefer to test and shop in person.
